Tunics
Well variety as most say, is the spice of life. While some might enjoy wearing upmarket and swanky gear, some prefer wearing simple yet very fashionable gear. A tunic is a very fashionable and simplistic gear worn as an outer garment. In most occasions, tunics were worn by women as it offers a good way of covering up most of their body parts. However, in modern day times, tunics have evolved into being worn by men as well. In fact, tunics suit most men quite well. Â
Tracing their origin to 2000 B.C., tunics were first discovered in Egypt where they were only used to cover up the upper part of the body. Tunics may be designed differently as each is designed by a different designer; however, tunics have a universal shape which is characterized by its rectangular shape, closely followed up by a fleapit on the head. The rectangular shape is brought to life by the large piece of fabric in which it is sewed up on. Some tunics may have the piece of fabric reach the waistline, while other tunics might have the piece of fabric exceed the waistline; again it all depends with who is designing the fabric. Most tunics are short sleeved in nature; however, designers’ love for experimentation has seen tunics being designed into long sleeves and ¾ sleeves.
While in the past Egyptians used to wear tunic with a garment known as a schenti, in modern times the tunic is worn with pretty much everything (except skirts). This means that tunics are often worn with slim fit trousers, normal fit trousers as well as all kind of shorts. Tunics with long rectangular fabrics are as well-worn without having to rock anything like trousers or shorts under; they are large enough to cover most parts of the body. From the latter we may deduce that tunics can be worn in different styles and have a great outlook.
Roles of Tunics
While some tunics may strictly be for casual wear, some are worn in domestic environments as well. Casual tunics are tunics worn for outwear purposes; and as such, they are decorated to serve that exact purpose. Casual tunics are garlanded in pleats and folds which make them increasingly modern. As a result, casual tunics are available in many colors to fulfill the casual and off-the-cuff role.
Domestic tunics on the other hand, have less or no decorations compared to casual tunics. Most domestic tunics are plain and only vary in color and size. Domestic tunics as their name suggests, are often worn in domestic environments such as in our homes. The domestic roles they fulfill may include housekeeping, as well as relaxing in doors. When worn for housekeeping uniform purposes, tunics can be classified in the uniforms section as most masters lend tunics to their house helps who take part in housekeeping.
Tunics have also found their way into religious jurisdictions, as clergy men also wear tunics in form of robes. It has to be however noted that, religious tunics leave little or no room for flamboyancy, as they reach the feet and are only decorated minimally.
